Las Vegas 2015 The Year In Pictures

Greg C: Las Vegas 2015 – The Year in Pictures

We asked our photographer extraordinaire, Greg C, to share with us The Year in Pictures. Each image can be clicked for a larger version. We now turn things over to Greg C.

The Closing of The Riviera

To me the big story of the year was the closing of the Riv after a 60-year run…. seeing that iconic neon go dark was like a final nail in the coffin for old Vegas on the Strip.

A couple shots of the neon signage, one of the “adios” messages, and two rooftop shots I took of the property while exploring during the liquidation sale. We should probably be seeing demo begin early in 2016 if LVCVA is going to get moving ahead with their expansion plans.

SLS

Having made its debut in Aug 2014, SLS has been facing an uphill battle all thru 2015. Regarding its future, the Lux tower becomes a W Hotel sometime in 2016. And, on a side note, the retail-ization of the Strip continued on in the year as yet another Walgreens popped up along with numerous other retail options.

GONE!

Two Vegas structures went down with thunder in February. First, the 44-year old Clarion (which had many names–starting with Royal Inn when opened in 1970, Paddlewheel in the 80s, Debbie Reynolds hotel in the 90s and finally Greek Isles in the 2000s) went down on February 10th. Five days later, an unfinished residential tower (the Gramercy) was imploded out in the suburbs of SW Las Vegas. We also saw the final demise of the much-maligned Harmon tower on the Strip–after more than a year’s worth of hammering, chipping and cutting.

Making Their Debut

Several new projects reached completion in 2015. The Wyndham Desert Blue (which had stalled in 2009, but resumed in 2014) opened up. MGMs Rock-N-Rio came (and went) in May and the Silverton completed its timeshare tower down off I-15 and Blue Diamond Road.

On the Way

Projects in the works, set for a 2016 debut. The Arena, The Lucky Dragon and The Park between NYNY and Monte Carlo.

The Las Vegas Club Closed

Downtown, the Las Vegas Club shut its doors this year.

  1. I was sad to see the passing of the riv. I payed my respects on my last trip in march. I saw crazy girls one last time in the old theater. On a side note How is the show doing down at ph? I was going to see the show there in march but wont go if it stinks.

  2. Thanks for checking out the pics of the year gone by!—Vegas never stops changing. Definitely sad to say farewell to the Riv–I plan to cover the demo process in 2016 so stay tuned for future photos. In answer to Mr Garrett above–I have not seen Crazy Girls at PH yet—Don’t know how it will compare….(it won’t be the same though–CG will always be Riviera memories)……Happy 2016!
