Sh*t You May Have Missed While Toasting The Olympians

It’s Sh*t You May Have Missed for the week ending August 12th, 2016

Hey, all of you Vegas lovers….BigAZMarty here….slow news week with Rio Olympics (city, not casino), NFL pre-season and such…but here we go:

1. Palms has 35th floor evacuated after someone discharged a fire extinguisher “maliciously”. Read LV Sun article here.  Four a.m. shenanigans are not that much fun for sleeping guests. I remember an Embassy Suites stay in Downey CA, where the fire alarm was going off every hour. Boy, was I a not-happy camper by morning! I’m hoping they comped the evacuated guests with something.

2. Caesars Palace had its 50th-anniversary last weekend. LV Sun has a lot of photos hereLVRJ was there with their own gallery of shots as well…read here.

3. Good news for Nevada and Las Vegas: Appeals Court decision has effectively killed the “sports betting bill”, which means Nevada remains the “Sports Betting King of the U.S.”. Read the LV Sun article here.

4. Bruno coming to…? Rumors in the past were that some combo of Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber were going to rotate at the Park MGM Theater, but out of the UK comes a new rumor that Bruno Mars is heading to one of the Caesars Entertainment premier showrooms instead. Read here.

5. Absinthe is moving to the Cosmo at Rose.Rabbit.Lie showroom after the Spiegeltent run is complete…read here. Or at Vital Vegas here.

Rose.Rabbit.Lie

Rose.Rabbit.Lie theater during “Vegas Nocturne” days…

6. Monte Carlo is closing up the pool and several shops/restaurants as the rebranding/makeover gets into full swing. This may affect the shortcut to Aria and the tram stop in that area.  Since Park MGM and NoMad are “NY style”….I have to say it (think Soup Nazi from “Seinfeld”)….”No pool for you” until 2018. They will allow you to dip in at other MGM pools, though. Read about it here. One thing interesting in there is the mention of a “rooftop pool”. I just hope they don’t do the 3.5′ to 4′ max pool depths again…that is just unacceptable and no fun. Bring back deep-end pools, slides, and diving boards!!!

7. Fascinating read…not necessarily news but how “advantage” players can get sideswiped by greed, then come back from it to lead a seemingly normal life. Read about it here.

8. Caesars gets approval to split CEOC (the bankrupt division) into two LLC companies by the court…read here. Watch for a lot of last-minute stuff happening with the CEOC bankruptcy. Caesars to ask for another hold to bondholder lawsuits as remaining holdouts have 54% of the second lien and won’t approve anything (log-jam strategy). But wait! CEOC is going to sue the same people…read here. This is all just legal wrangling until a judge or jury says otherwise.

9. LVRJ has an interesting what-if regarding Moulin Rouge casino project ups and downs. It’s an interesting read you can find here.

10. An interesting article about how Vegas is adjusting the revenue mix at their resorts (MGM, especially), read here. Thanks to EDGE Vegas for the pointer to the article.

11. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver featured billionaires owning newspapers…you know who you are, LVRJ!. Vital Vegas has a great post about it here.

12. Wynn’s ShowStoppers is going to extend lifespan through end of year…read here.

13. Vital Vegas has more Riviera destruction shots here (featuring music by Michael Movestro). It’s almost all down and the August 15th dual-tower blowout is around the corner. Sad to see it go forever, except the remains to be housed at the Neon Museum.

14. Next month’s Life is Beautiful music festival line-up is announced…read here.

15. MGM Grand Garden Arena to host Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience. Details here.

16. Barbra Streisand had her concerts at T-Mobile Arena. Article about them here. I find it interesting that she uses teleprompters yet still sings live. Take that, Britney,/JLo/Mariah!  She evidently forgot the words during a performance in the 60’s and has been using them ever since. She also goes off-script, which you don’t see much anymore.

And now over to our YouTube music composer and editor in chief, Michael Movestro, it’s all yours!!!

Thank you, Marty, for bringing us the stuff we missed while toasting the Olympics. I know I missed a story or two as I’ve been busy watching the Olympic coverage, every single second that I can. GO TEAM USA!!! So how’s about that Phelps? And that gymnastic team? Right? It’s a shame the Women’s Beach Volleyball team lost, it was a valiant battle! Win Tokyo 2020, ladies! Ok, this is the side of me that you readers (and our volunteer staff) never see of me. The Olympics is the one time every couple of years (Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics) that I am the ultimate sports fan. I’m an Olympic junkie, I can admit it, and nothing makes me happier (for a two-week period) than rooting for TEAM USA!

Ok…Olympic News isn’t what you’re here for. You can get all that (and stream live) over here. So now, without further ado ( GO TEAM USA!) here are our stories for this week:

17. I started off the week with motion signage added to the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas.

18. Blonde4ever detoured from Las Vegas with a fascinating day trip to Laughlin. Hint: The original Vegas Vic that was once in Downtown is in Laughlin! Vegas history win!

Laughlin

19. Chad Rodick checks in…and checks out Embassy Suites Las Vegas.

20. Michael James compares a Reno stay to a Vegas stay with interesting results.

21. New Contributor James Dingsdale shares a familiar experience with a Las Vegas taxi driver.

Taxi

22. Sammasseur Wakes Up To Breakfast Burritos, Mimosas…and Drag Queens?

23. I shared a Vegas Video on the top 10 Las Vegas Casino Implosions.

And…

24. Sammasseur visits the construction site of Wynn’s “Luxury Shopping Plaza.”

That’s it for this week! We’ll see you next week starting on Monday with more Vegas stories. Reminder: the Riviera’s final implosion will be happening on the 16th. We’ll have the video right here on Wednesday (the 17th) morning! I’m taking a break from the podcast; it’ll be back on the 28th. That way it gives me a week to deal with the “post-Olympic blues” I’ve been known to get. See you Monday!
