Memories of The Riviera

Mona in MN: Memories of The Riviera

Mona in MN shares her memories of The Riviera…

My second trip to Vegas was in May 2001, for a 5-night stay at the Riviera. I was there with a friend along with her family as her brother was getting married. The wedding was at the cute chapel at the Riviera and was very nice. Our room was on the 10th floor and had a balcony facing south on the strip. Beautiful view! I enjoyed the pool one day as it was about 102 degrees, the pool was not very big but didn’t need to be, just to get in and get wet to cool off.

We had free tickets to the house Comedy Show which we really enjoyed, can’t remember the name of the comedian. Most of our gambling was done right there at Riviera with an occasional walk across the street to Slots of Fun. I liked the fact that Riviera wasn’t a huge casino, you could always see out the big openings to the street. A number of us enjoyed playing pinball and it was great being able to play right there with plenty of room to gather and play.

The food court had plenty of selection and variety when we needed a quick snack or lunch. We ventured out and walked the entire strip to Mandalay Bay one day (we took the trolley back). One of the Rush Hour movies was being filmed at the Desert Inn just before it was to be imploded.

So, one side of the sign said Desert Inn, the other side said Red Dragon.

  1. I remember the red dragon thing, I was in town while that was going on. I never stayed at the Riv, but stopped in there a few times, saw the impersonator show, gambled a little. I was never crazy about the place but I hate to see it go. I was playing BJ one evening $5 or $10, and I was up about $100. I wanted to escape with my winnings, so when I signaled to color up, the dealer freaked out. it seemed like she feared for her job as If she would get fired for letting me walk away a winner. more or less telling me I was stupid for quitting while I was winning. I kindly left without hurling insults at her, maybe I felt sorry for her. I never played there much after that.
