Du-Par's Closes

No More Pancakes: Du-par’s Closes at Golden Gate

Du-par’s closes at Golden Gate and pancakes in Vegas will never be the same.

The Golden Gate location of Du-par’s Restaurant and Bakery, known to me as having the best pancakes (or hotcakes as they were called), ever, has closed. It seems as though a lot of my favorite places are closing lately. Anyways, the press release passed on to me by EdgeVegas was brief, almost as brief as Du-par’s remaining hours yesterday.

LAS VEGAS – Due to financial reasons, Du-par’s Restaurant & Bakery at Golden Gate Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas will close February 8 at midnight. A leased tenant of the historic hotel, Du-par’s had struggled with payments over an extended period of time.

While the restaurant will be closed for the time being, Golden Gate is currently evaluating future opportunities for the space.

My first DU-Par’s experience was back in June of 2016… I was on a Vegas visit and tweeted that I needed a high carb breakfast Downtown. And, when many of you tweeted back with “Pancakes at Du-par’s” it lead to a great start of the day as evidenced in the pics below.

I got half-way through that full stack.

Du-par’s was a favorite of many locals and Downtown tourists alike. Celebrated for their pancakes, other fare, and of course the old Vegas staple, the shrimp cocktail. No word yet on when shrimp cocktails will again be available at Golden Gate. I’m confident the shrimp cocktail tradition will carry on somewhere else at GG, most likely with the new occupant. Unless, of course, the new occupant is a fucking Starbucks, but I doubt that will be the case. Nonetheless, Du-par’s had a good seven-year run at Golden Gate and made a lot of fans along the way. You can read Blonde4ever’s review here.

There is another Du-par’s location, so all hope is not lost. The Suncoast Hotel and Casino has a Du-par’s, sans the shrimp cocktail and sans the easy walking distance to say, everything else on Fremont St. At the time of this writing, Vital Vegas also has a story on the closure of Du-par’s with more detail to the closing.

UPDATE: Per Derek Stevens, Golden Gate owns the shrimp cocktail, so that, at least will be back. Also, per Derek, the payments were not rent related which leads to possible IRS/bank issues.

  1. The Blackberry Granola pancake at Hash House A Go-Go is pretty spectacular.

Also, the pancakes at Eat rival Du-Pars… though I can’t have them anymore as I am addicted to Eat’s Country Fried Steak.

    1. I’m with you on hash house’s pancakes. Absolutely fantastic. I tried the snickers pancake on a whim and it was surprisingly good.

  2. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I’ve never tried BUT…I’ve heard amazing things and was on my list as a MUST DO this time. UGGHHH

  3. Went to Du-Par’s the first and only time a couple of years ago and used the coupon from Las Vegas Advisor MRB for a free short stack. Service was terrible, unfriendly, and it took 25 minutes for my order. I browsed their menu while I waited for the hotcakes and decided they are too over priced for me. Call me cheap, but after looking at your bill, $20 for some pancakes, 4 pieces of bacon and a coke is highway robbery!

  4. I’ll admit it’s been a while since I have been there, but this is sad. Tasty food for a very good price.

  5. The previous occupant, Bay City Diner, left DuPar’s in the dust. Everything about it was superior. Of course I say that because I’m not a pancake fan. Let’s hope they restore the better restaurant that once drew me in. Bay City Diner had me at every visit to Downtown, often my first stop before even checking in. DuPars? Twice was enough for me.

  6. At least the Shrimp Cocktail will be back somewhere at the GG. Those are awesome and a great snack. A must every time I go to Vegas. I go to Vegas for things I cannot get at home like cheap shrimp cocktails.

  7. Sad news. I guess it is a good thing I indulged in those wonderful pancakes last trip. You never know when you are doing something for the last time, do you?

  8. theres 4 locations here in LA so all hope is not lost….. the thought of eating pancakes in LV always seemed strange to me, I can eat pancakes at any Denny’s or Ihop back home. If im doing breakfast in LV it has to be Peppermill for their 3 egg eggs benedict :)

  9. Doggone, next visit Downtown is going to be surreal with so many changes. No Mermaids, Bayou, Dupars or even train cars. What next? I think I WILL drive to a local Dupars for pancakes, though. I never have, except for pie, once.

  10. Sad news, indeed! On solo trips, my first meal in town was always at Du-par’s. I used the $15 food voucher in the GG mailers, which meant the meal was always free. I was never wild about any of the pies I tried, but would often get a cinnamon roll or blueberry muffin to go and eat it for breakfast in the room the next morning. I always found the waitstaff to be friendly and efficient, regardless of how busy the restaurant was.
