Love and Nostalgia: Blonde4ever Reviews Elton John – Million Dollar Piano

Blonde4ever Loves Elton John and his Million Dollar Piano

I owe Elton John an apology.

Not that he cares, but I do. I had forgotten how fabulous he was.

I knew it when I was a young person. I played my copy of “Don’t Shoot Me, I am Only the Piano Player” until I wore it out. But somewhere along the line, through the blur of marriage and children and work, I forgot. His music became just background noise, like the MUZAK system in an elevator.

It wasn’t until I attended his show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that I remembered.

Elton John - Million Dollar Piano

Good Lord, how is it that I have never seen Million Dollar Piano before? It was actually an emotional experience for me. I don’t expect to go to Vegas shows and be moved. It doesn’t normally happen; it did this time. I was brought to tears several times; partly from nostalgia and partly just in complete awe of his incredible talent. I would be remiss if I didn’t include Bernie Taupin in my accolades as it is the miraculous combination of Bernie’s words and John’s music that makes these songs so unforgettable.

As we settled into our seats I was surprised to see that there were no giant screens flanking the stage as there has been in every concert I have been to in recent years. There was just a huge, oddly shaped set on on the stage. Elton John - Million Dollar PianoAs the show progressed I marveled at how stunning that set was and how different they could make it look just by shining various lights on it. I also realized there was really no need for the giant screens. You are there to listen. The screens might even detract from that.

His audience was wildly enthusiastic and made up of many return visitors I am sure. You couldn’t help but be swept up in the mass adoration of Elton John. His sets march you back through time and you stand amazed at how many hits this man has had and how his music has been the soundtrack of your life.

My advice to you is not to be as stupid and negligent as I was. Go to see him NOW while you still can. I guarantee you won’t be sorry. I would like to end with some lyrics from Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters, one of my favorite Elton John songs, for no particular reason, just because.

“And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City
Until you’ve seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the lord there’s people out there like you
I thank the lord there’s people out there like you
While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light”

Elton John – Million Dollar Piano runs various days per month, see the event calendar for details and ticket.

  1. My Wife & I saw Elton on our 25th Anniversary trip to Vegas a couple years ago and I agree, He puts on a damn good show,
We would have preferred more of his older songs but all was good. We’ll try to see him again before he checks out, and as the Blond said “You won’t be sorry” !

  2. Gave me goose bumps reading the verse at the end, just like I got during the show. Great review, Blonde!

  3. We saw him a few years ago, the night he threw a fit and tossed water and tables all over the place. Cut his show short that night from what I guess he normally does. Even with all that, he was truly amazing!! Still plan on a return just to see how good he is when he is not pissed off about something. Must see, no doubt!!

  4. I’m catching him next month…with all the singers that went too soon last year, you can’t assume anyone is going to be around for you to catch them “next time”.

  5. Saw him New Years day and your comments are spot on.
Been trying to get there for a couple years but my trips never coincided with his shows.
    Really enjoyed it.
