A Visit to Palace Station

Blonde4ever shares her first visit to Palace Station

As a frequent Vegas visitor, you will often find me doing the same things in the same places. We all have our favorites, don’t we? But now and then it is fun to crawl out of our ruts and try something new. As a non-driving, budget conscious person, my urges to do new things are often curtailed by the thoughts of having to spend $60 in cab fare to do whatever it is that I want to do. Now that Uber and Lyft are present in Las Vegas with their great service at reasonable (aka cheap) prices, it opens up a world of possibilities, one being Palace Station.

I have heard for years that Palace Station was a great place for value-minded people to hang out. I finally got the opportunity to visit on my last trip in October 2016. I hear there are many improvements on the horizon for this establishment which is wonderful, but I hope they are still a good value at the end of all the renovations.

My Vegas roommate and I “Lyfted” over to Palace Station to check things out one beautiful fall day. As we always do when we visit some place new, we whipped out our cameras and started snapping pictures of the entrance, the lobby, etc. We were making our way over to the Feast Buffet for lunch. We passed by an attractive looking bar with fancy woodwork, so we both stopped to take a picture. The bar was closed and empty. Suddenly we were pounced upon by an enthusiastic security guard who told us that we were not allowed to take any pictures on the property.

I understand the desire not to have us taking pictures of people playing in the casino or of the casino cage, but a closed bar, or a buffet sign? He amended his instructions somewhat and told us that we could take a picture if someone was in it and the property was only the background. We were still somewhat confused, but you don’t argue with security, so we slunk meekly away. As my friend pointed out, it is much easier to take pictures surreptitiously with a phone than a camera, and we both had cameras. I didn’t want to break the rules, but how can I report on anything if I can’t take a picture of it?

Wouldn’t you think they would want the free advertising? We decided to take our chances and snapped a few furtive pictures of the buffet and our food.

The prices for this buffet are beyond amazing, which likely explains the line up we had to stand in to get in. I also came equipped with a Las Vegas Advisor “2 for 1” coupon which made our lunch even cheaper.

As with all buffets they had an excellent selection of food. I love when buffets have turkey and cranberry sauce. I really enjoyed the fried chicken as well. I have never had tamales before, so I decided to experiment and try one. Did you know that tamales are wrapped in either green banana, plantain or corn husks? I did not. I think this one was wrapped in a corn husk. I spent a good deal of time gnawing on it before I came to the conclusion that it was inedible. They should have a sign over them; “Don’t be an idiot and attempt to eat the wrapper.” Something like that.

The best part of any meal is always dessert. Apparently, one whole side of their dessert area was devoted to “No Sugar Added” desserts. I tried a few and thought they tasted way too yummy to be NSA, but I could be wrong.

Palace Station

The only thing I disliked about the buffet was the room itself. I hate the colour yellow (second only to orange). Sadly, everything in this place was yellow; the floor was yellow, the walls were yellow, the ceiling was yellow, the tables were yellow. The predominance of this colour in the room made everything you ate look yellow.
It seems there is even a word for my condition, Xanthophobia.

After eating, we decided to wander their casino and see what it was like and play awhile. I had my first experience with Lightning Links which I have now fallen madly in love with. I think they have replaced Buffalo as my new beau. I wound up leaving Palace Station with more money than I walked in with which always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling for the place and a desire to return. Hopefully next time I will be able to experience the rooms and the pool area.

And xanthophobia or not, my desire for a good inexpensive meal overrides my hatred of yellow, so I will definitely be back, and I highly recommend the Feast Buffet.

  1. Been to Vegas at least 15 times, never been to Palace Station. Good review. I may have to be “Lyfted” over there next time I am in town! I always enjoy your reviews, keep em coming!

  2. Um, excuse me, but touching issues?

A little courtesy for those who need to see plate in between foods (or even better, compartment plates) would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

  3. Palace Station is my frequent go-to for a quick breakfast or dinner when staying in the Westgate/SLS/Royal Hotel area. My love affair with the buffet began when Riviera was my “home hotel”, and it was just an easy drive west on Sahara. Far superior to Circus Circus, especially for the price.

      1. I’ll give you one more great tip, Bonnie. Now that Stations has taken over the Palms, they’ve repriced their superb buffet to be in the same category of other Stations casinos WITHOUT dropping the quality. So if you’re in that area, you get even MORE bang for your buck.

  4. Bonnie liked your review of the Palace Station, I discovered it years ago, the buffet, is a great value had lots of breakfasts there when I use to rent a car, would to stay there as they’re room rates are good, just wish it was downtown, how much was the ride there?

  5. we went to Palace Station from the Peppermill it was $2.17 ($2.98 CAN) Mainstreet
Station to Palace Station is $3.68 ($5.06 CAN ) with LYFT

  6. for a value-priced buffet, they are just about the best. even better with players card or coupon. the food is not too bad. hence, you will always see a lot of locals there for dinner.

  7. we ate the buffet on our visit in december and sometimes simple can be better than great…..they had grilled hamburgers and hot dogs serving right off the grill….now to me that is awesome when I can stack tomatoes, onions, pickles, etc to my liking………..I believe I ate 4 burgers and 3 dogs that nite

  8. Leaving for Vegas soon; the article was right on time. Adding Palace Station to my list of places to go. Thanks!

  9. You don’t mention, but when I stayed a couple of years ago, I thought the buffet seating was limited and uncomfortable. Or maybe we just chose a tiny, uncomfortable table with hard seats. Also you didn’t say whether the actual tamale was okay. I never pass up tamales, having grown up on them, even though “store-bought” are almost always dry. And you’re in good company in wrapper-ignorance. I think it was then-President Gerald Ford who famously tried to eat tamale wrappings at a cookout

    1. We were initially heading for a booth but I found the booth too cramped so we opted for a table and chairs which was fine.
Having never had a tamale before, I have nothing to compare it to. I did not find it exciting, but I would certainly try it again at other restaurants, just to compare.
I am glad I am in good company about the wrapper incident! LOL

  10. Hi Bonnie, great to read this article. We’ve been to Palace Station to try out the Oyster Bar and it was fabulous! Good to see that there are still places were you get value for your money. Vegas seems to turn into a place where ‘the more you pay, the less you get’ applies. So it’s a joy to read about places that are the opposite.

  11. Thanks for the review. I don’t know where Palace Station is, but sounds worthwhile to find out. Also, thanks for the laugh about the tamale wrapper! How to eat them is not intuitive, I guess, but still–funny story!

  12. Hello Blonde4ever,
Loved your Review . Palace Station is my Home Base while I’m in Las Vegas. The Bar you were referring to is called Trackside , The Buffet is a Great Value that Gets Better with a LVA Coupon. , They Have Military Mondays Coupons that they Give to Veterans and Active Duty personnel as well. usually a Free Beer , $2 Shots of Jack Daniels , Free Tall Starbucks coffee to name a Few. The Rooms in the Tower are Nice , I suggest staying away from the Garden Rooms . They are in the OLD Two Story Hotel in the Rear of the Property. Clean but a fair distance from anything and the Hallway smelled Musty when I was there in Jan 2017.

Little Tony’s Pizzeria Had a Nice Lunch time Special A Small Caesar Salad , 8inch Pizza with one topping and a Beverage ( Non Alcoholic ) for $7.99 Pizza is Fantastic. Say Hello to Dana the Daytime Bartender , She keeps your Glasses Full and conversation Flowing. The OYSTER Bar is Phenomenal . Usually a 1 & 1/2 to 2 Hour Wait in Line but well worth it. The Irish Pub sends waitresses out to Fill Patrons Drink orders while Waiting. A Nice Touch I think. Try the Chefs Special Combo . Have Noramyer or Eze make it a 8 on the Spice level and ENJOY.

  13. Thanks for the review, we’ve never been but have always said we wanted to check it out sometime. I guess our May trip would be that time. Now I’m excited, we have a new place to visit. Is it over by the new casino they just opened?

  14. Palace Station was our hotel when we went to Vegas back in the early 2000s. Buffet was superb and ranked #1 by locals back then. They used to provide free shuttle service to two places on the strip; the MGM and the Fashion showcase mall. I don’t know if they still do; but worth the trip. We stayed in the Tower section which was really nice back then. Heck, this is the place where OJ got busted. It is a must see!
