T-Mobile Arena Projection Mapping

T-Mobile Arena’s Very Vegas Ice Intro is a Projection Mapping Win

A Projection Mapping Win for T-Mobile Arena…

Late last week T-Mobile Arena hosted Frozen Fury which as I understand it (and by that, meaning, I looked it up because I’m not a sports guy) is an annual pre-season game between the LA Kings and the Colorado Avalanche (though it wasn’t always against Colorado). This year’s games were the L.A.Kings vs. Dallas Stars on the 7th, and L.A. Kings vs. Colorado Avalanche on the 8th. Previously these games were played at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Greg C caught this advert at T-Mobile:

Now the part that gave me the warm fuzzies (meaning, I’m a tech geek, a fan of Las Vegas, and of 3D Video/Projection Mapping) is this video below shot by Twitter user and ESPN Senior Writer Arash Markazi.

It’s uniquely Vegas and features blackjack, slots, craps, roulette and sweeping cityscape views of the strip (although, it would have been nice if they included Downtown, what gives?). The musical backdrop to the piece is set to Frank Sinatra’s “This Town” (which was featured in Ocean’s Thirteen). The technology used is called Projection Mapping, though sometimes it’s referred to as Video Mapping or 3D Mapping and transforms objects into surfaces for displaying video. Saks 5th Avenue does a good job at this around the holidays.

This is also one of my favorites of the Sydney Opera House.

Other hockey teams also have 3D Mapping of the ice, but the one at T-Mobile Arena has a special place in my heart as Las Vegas is my “adopted city,” which means I’ll be cheering on the hockey team, whatever their name will be which will be revealed on November 18th.

Special thanks to Twitter user Clay Stone for bringing this to my attention.

  1. This is all kinds of cool. My Predators started doing this on the ice two seasons ago and it really is something to see live.

  2. I found it interesting that the blackjack portion of the show had 3:2 rules on the table and not 6:5. Must be for highrollers?

  3. This year it was Dallas and Colorado. :) As Chris in Nashville said, the Preds started doing it a couple of years ago and as cool as it is on video, live is a “must see”.
