SoCal Todd: My Vegas Musts Are Warm and Fuzzy

Vegas Bright reader SoCal Todd shares “Vegas Musts” that give him that warm Vegas feeling…

Play the  Sigma Derby horse racing game at either The D on Fremont or at MGM Grand. Good old-fashioned quarter-at-a-time gaming fun with fast drink service.

Having a slice of the “New Yorker” at Pizza Rock. Amazing pizza just off Fremont Street. Afterwards, you can swing by the Downtown Grand and play a bit. They could use the business.

Pizza Rock in the distance, lonely Downtown Grand in the foreground…

If you are a watch fan, a stop at Tourneau in the Forum Shops at Caesars should be high on your list. A large selection of high end watches in an approachable atmosphere, where you can browse without feeling like you don’t belong.

Go off-Strip to the Outdoor World shop at the Silverton Hotel. If you like any outdoor-related activity, you will love this store. Huge selection of all kinds of gear, a giant aquarium, and a boat dealer all under one roof.

Get an LV Monorail pass. Lyft and Uber have made getting around Vegas a cheaper proposition these days, but there’s still nothing like the old Disney-stylee experience of a monorail to get you around. I use the time it takes to get from place to place as a way to stem the losing…if my gaming isn’t being cooperative. The stations are in the “back 40” of the hotels, so your step counter will thank you.

Play some video poker at the Times Square Bar at New York NY. You can enjoy the piano entertainment, see some drunk folks, get good bartender service, and avoid the cover.

Another vote here for the conservatory botanical display at Bellagio. Amazing amount of detail goes into the displays. They change with the seasons so it never gets old.

Vegas Musts

Walk the strip in the early morning. It’s not crowded, much cooler, and there are many examples of the “walk of shame” to be had.

Casino-crawl along Fremont Street. Old Vegas is still alive and well downtown. Plenty of casinos to pop in and out of, lots of nutty people walking around, and very cool light shows in the evening make for a good time. I make it a priority to do this each trip. I put $20 in a video poker bar at every casino along the street getting plenty boozy along the way.

Vegas Musts

Next, a Must you should do at least once in your Vegas career…Halloween in Vegas!

Crazy drunk people in costumes. Doesn’t get much better. One of the best places to see this mayhem is at MGM Grand.
Pick a spot at the central video poker bar or at the Derby game (one of my other musts) near the main walkway through the casino. You will see a parade of folks walking to Hakkasan dressed and not-so-dressed in the weirdest stuff you have ever seen. A true spectacle.

  1. I have eaten at Pizza Rock many times, I like it, I usually just getting one slice to go. the last time (August), it was not so good. I don’t know if it had been sitting too long, just a bad day or what, but something was off.
