Vegas Musts

Chris In Tennessee: My “Vegas Musts”

Vegas Bright reader Chris in Tennessee shares his “Vegas Musts.”

I used to travel to Las Vegas every summer to meet up with two friends who I used to work with. The three of us are spread across the country, so our annual Vegas trip was always something to look forward to. We usually stayed for five nights, so we never felt like we “had” to do something in that time. Gladly and sadly, we are all married and have kids now, so this annual jaunt has ceased for the time being.

BUT, I do get to Las Vegas once a year for an annual business meeting. Since my time is more limited, I now have a few MUSTS while I am in Vegas….

1. I MUST have one dinner at Prime at the Bellagio. Not only is this the finest steak and gratin potatoes this mouth has ever had (and it’s had a lot), where else can you eat such a fine meal while sitting inside a giant Tiffany’s jewelry box? This meal in this setting is truly my happy place. No other dinner in American can compare for me.

2. I MUST play $5 Wheel of Fortune until I get at least one bonus spin. I love the two machines at the Aria just by the pai gow pit. I’d say 80% of the time I walk away with more than I came with, but there is that 20% where of course I don’t. Regardless, I love the Wheel of Fortune more than any other slot out there, and I must play it when I am in town.

3. I MUST roll the dice at the Mirage. I give the Mirage some of my play because I feel like I owe it some respect. It was the first big boy on the strip. Now it is more like my old Uncle who still has stories to tell. Sure there are prettier, newer and classier places in town, but the Mirage will always hold a special place in my heart.

4. I MUST have a burger at the Burger Bar in Mandalay Place just before leaving for the airport. I have a four-hour flight back to Nashville, and I always leave Vegas with a good taste in my mouth no matter what the tables or slots have done to me. I order the Kobe beef, ciabatta bread, blue cheese, caramelized onions and sweet potato fries. It never fails.

So I pack a lot into my free time on business trips, but it is worth it.
