Recent Observations: Tips from A Recent Vegas Trip

One of our readers, Patrick B, shares observations from his recent Vegas trip…

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share some things I noticed from my last trip:

1) I stayed at the Mirage Saturday night and Sunday night. Though parking is no longer free, I found this to be an advantage because of the ample parking. Even at 3 am,  I found parking.

2) I’m not a high roller, but going to Vegas makes me feel glamorous. I splurged on a dinner at Twist over at the Mandarin Oriental. The views are simply stunning; I highly recommend a visit. Also, their afternoon tea seems like something of interest.

Observations

3) Viva Las Arepas, I kid you not I ate there all four days.

4) I’ve switched over to the Palms on Monday night. I decided to extend my day. Surprisingly clean rooms, and a huge bath with a whirlpool tub. The downside: pool hours were 9 am – 6 pm, and I was extensively searched like I was entering a club only to find four people at the pool. Overstaffed? I think so. This property was hot in its heyday but felt lifeless during my stay.

5) XS ain’t what she used to be. I’m not much into the club scene, but this place has great DJs. The operations were overall sloppy, as we were shuffled into four different lines.

6) Primm Stateline. It used to be the gateway from California. I’ve had fond memories of going to Vegas over the summer and doing my back-to-school shopping there with my family. Now many of its doors are closed and the billboards are all sun bleached. Not to mention, no more Nevada Landing.

7) Fontainebleau…. I see its potential and near-completion. Someone needs to buy it and open it in phases. For example: first phase casino, second phase shops and dining, third phase rooms…, etc. At least they can collect some revenue if it’s done in sections.

8) Meanwhile, at Resorts World, it still looks like no progress.

9) Circus Circus looks scary from the outside. Maybe a good power washing will brighten it up.

  1. Love this stuff! As for Fontainebleau….I still hold out hope. I remember the day it was announced, the day it broke ground and the day it stalled. Until it looks like the Riviera (what too soon?) I won’t give up hope. VIVA!

  2. Great post! Love this kind of stuff.

I was wondering about the Palms. I used to stay there back in its heyday. Loved that place back then.

  3. Nice!
I was just there a few days ago and thought, they should just implode circus circus and start the north end of the strip from scratch. didtch alon & resort world. all the signs still say 2018. If your downtown & hungry I don’t recommend downtown crown pub. It’s not half as good as their sister company Crown & Anchor, Kungfu is always a must for Thai food & the new Benihanas at Fashion Show mall is awesome. I stayed at the Mirage too and I loved the self parking. Might be $10 but you get close parking and you can come and go as you please which is a plus for me as I never sit still in Vegas.

  4. Great article. Not sure what XS was before but its an ok time to get great pics. Srillex was there the in July when I was there and they have a late guest list at 1am. Mirage is a great hotel.
