Sh*t You May have Missed While Searching For Pokemon

It’s Sh*t you may have missed for the week ending July 22nd, 2016.

Hey all….busy news week everywhere else (GOP, upcoming Olympics in Rio) but kinda slow for Las Vegas.

1. Speaking of Rio…the Las Vegas one this time: The WSOP final table has been set for Oct 30th in the Penn and Teller Theater. All players will receive a minimum of $1M to sit at the table, but they are all eyeing the big $8M grand prize. Read who…and more details…here.

2. Tropicana is closing up Raiding the Rock Vault. In similar news (i.e. same article) Steve Wynn is closing up ShowStoppers, which he worked so hard on. Read the LVRJ article here.

3. In a big surprise, especially after a huge record-setting week, Absinthe is abandoning the Spiegeltent at Caesars Palace. With the other hotels’ main showrooms now coming open, could any of them support Absinthe‘s particular design for “tent” work? Read LV Sun article here.

4. Cirque’s Beatles LOVE at Mirage is finished getting tweaked for the 10th Anniversary celebration that was held last Thursday (our Sammasseur attended the Red Carpet festivities video clip here). This is still one of the best-rated shows for Cirque, but I’m partial to the original Mystere at T.I. Granted I’ve not personally seen LOVE, but you know what you know. Read here from LV Sun.

5. Lebron James and some Cav teammates came back to LV to do a proper NBA Championship celebration at Cosmo…read about it here. Still, though…having the UNLV marching band lead you into the room while playing “We are the Champions” by Queen? Pretty sweet.

6. One of the oldest and longest-running casinos is expanding to catch the travelers soon to be coming up from Mexico, Tucson, and Phoenix areas. Railroad Pass Casino has received approval to add truck and auto-filling stations as well as a truck stop and assorted quick restaurants. Read LVRJ article here for details. Also hidden in the article is the fact that the old US-95 will have that corner removed in favor of the new I-11 roadway. If you’ve ever been out this way, it’s the intersection for people coming out of Vegas/Henderson to turn left into the casino.

7. Locals only $50 deal at Caesars Palace main showroom, the Coliseum. Read details here. Pictures have been airbrushed, as that can’t be Mariah.

8. Giada does yoga on the High Roller…details here. Doesn’t look like hot yoga…so no cleaning crew needed or air freshener. Some of those yoga pictures had me wondering…what happens if you fall backward into the doors of the pod?

9. VitalVegas shares some new Riviera carnage on their Twitter (below) plus great drone footage and recent pics in this article.

10. NFL in Las Vegas proper..as in the actual City of Las Vegas? Mayor Goodman is suggesting NFL stadium to go where Cashman Field is now. Read details here. All the other possible stadium locations are not in the city limits of Las Vegas proper.

11. Eater Vegas has an article on rare Pokemon to be found at various restaurants and bars.

12. Caesar’s subsidiary CEOC bankruptcy news…they have settled another smaller issue (still not the main Jr. bondholders, which could drag Caesars down as well), CET to take on $17 million of benefits that CEOC were no longer paying to ex-Hilton employees from previous mergers that were put into CEOC to “reduce debt”.

13. You wouldn’t believe it, but Hard Rock Hotel Casino isn’t old enough to drink until this weekend. Celebrations and deals here.

14. Somehow I came across this little tidbit on the webs….review here…funny thing is I don’t know any of the names of the casinos listed in the agree/disagree portions…so this could be totally false. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the rest of Las Vegas CEO’s follow Derek Stevens‘ example and be on the floor for customers? If the C-Suite is not on the floor or even checking rooms for some part of the month, then they are too out of touch to really run the business and gauge what the customer really wants. Even the loosest slot machine will turn a house profit over time. Forcing them to do an Undercover Boss as housekeepers would be fun to see. Especially if it’s one of those special teams assigned to the trashed and bio-hazard rooms.

15. Finally, Strip buskers that are illegally selling goods are no longer going to be arrested. They instead will get tickets that could fine them out of existence ($1,000 per ticket). Details here.

  1. Interesting that Absinthe is leaving Caesar’s. Such a unique show and venue. Will be interesting to see where it lands.

  2. It’s interesting that the writer in #14 bemoans the MBAs running casinos, yet his best supporting example, Derek Stevens, actually has an MBA.

    1. You know I forgot that Derek had an MBA which is completely my mistake and apologies to all for forgetting that….now an interesting fact about Wayne State University. The other Alumni from Wayne State U (with a law degree) that has casino’s (among a lot of other things like the newly minted NBA Champions) is Dan Gilbert who bought Caesar’s out of the Ohio casinos and with the Detroit “Greektown” casino has merged them into “JACK Entertainment”.

    2. Still a legit point though, #14 referred to Dennis Conrad’s bemoaning of the majority of MBA holders in the casino industry being out of touch with the customer. Just because Derek Stevens has one doesn’t necessarily disqualify him from being an example to follow by other casino owners. It’s great to see him among the customers, because unlike a certain WYNNING casino owner (who dislikes his customers), Derek knows the key to success is to keep his eyes and ears open to customer satisfaction and trends.

  3. I love that Derek is on the floor, but he has to remember that when he is, people are watching. If he isn’t in the mood to be the Mayor of Fremont, he shouldn’t show up. Seen Mr. Stevens be pretty dickish to people. So don’t look behind the curtain

  4. I was at the Marquee party with Lebron. so MAD i have to wait till next year so I can get more pics and good video of the night and day clubs :-(

  5. I’ve seen that Mariah show last year and got seats in the last section cause i was afraid my money would do down the drain but it was GOOD!!!! She sang so well and didnt lip sync. Stage presence and all was top notch. I would go see again. Hoping to see Boys to Men and Jlo next time
