The Still

Checking out: The Still at Mirage

For drinks, The Still impresses. For food, still unimpressed.

Taking over the former Revolution Lounge space at The Mirage comes The Still. The experience I had there felt like a total disconnect. I would say not to go for the food. Go for drinks, with the possibility that you might be open enough to the opportunity of food eventually. Let me explain…

My wife and I arrived on the day we were set to leave Vegas, it was raining, it was Friday, I already had the post-Vegas blues though our flight wasn’t to leave for a few hours. I blame the weather. On the plus side, I got a nifty Las Vegas hoodie from Walgreens to keep warm and dry. So back to The Still. After slot-hopping at The Mirage, it was time to stop in The Still. I knew since it opened that I would try it out at least once, sort of a way of making up for the multiple times I didn’t visit that spot when it was Revolution Lounge. It was the main thing I looked forward to on this day, actually. We were seated, and a cocktail waitress approached us. She gave us a drink menu, no food menu.

The Still

My wife and I were kinda “hangry.” So we asked about the food and the CW said: “I’m just the cocktail waitress if you want food you can order and pay at the trailer, and they’ll bring your food out.” Odd. By the way, I later heard from others after my trip that they had to bring their food to their tables, it wasn’t brought to them. Low staff day?

We each ordered a soda and a water, and when the drinks showed up, we headed down to the stream trailer. It was an interesting concept; an indoor food truck.

The Still The Still

We each got the sliders, and I didn’t realise we each ordered the same thing until we got back to the table. After I placed my order and paid, I started taking pics.

The Still The Still

On most occasions, my wife and I pay our own way; it makes a happier marriage for us when the financial burden isn’t solely on one person. This seems to surprise people for some reason, though. We took pictures and headed back to the table and waited for the food. It wasn’t food truck fast, but it showed up eventually. You know how when you’re very hungry, anything will taste good on the first bite? Not this time. It looked good, though.

The Still

I was expecting a burst of flavor. On the first bite in, not impressed. I should have been; I was starving. The first bite of anything would have tasted good. Surprisingly, though, no. We each agreed the food was “meh.” There was also an instant disconnect: drinks from here, food from there. Pay there, not here. “I’m just the cocktail waitress.”

The Still

It’s almost as the food option at The Still was an after-thought. Or, maybe, the food should be. It’s called The Still after all, when you think of a still you think liquor, like moonshine. It brings to mind speakeasies, not food. A look at the long list of cocktails and beers suggest The Still is 99% about the drinks. We didn’t have any of the cocktails, but our fellow customers seemed to be enjoying them a lot. Each person with a drink seemed very happy. If anything, go to The Still for good cocktails, but go somewhere else for good food. Or, drink a lot at The Still, and then get your food there. The buzz might convince that the food is fantastic. I for one have eaten the world’s most amazing Snickers bar after downing 8 Irish Car Bombs back in the drunken days of my youth. Now, I can’t handle two StrongBows.

  1. Not to pick out the absolute wrong part of the article to comment on, but my wife and I also pay our own way. She has her money, I have mine. If I gamble it all and she doesn’t then she gets to eat.

Only special events (like my dinners at Vic & Anthony’s, Lago and the Foundation Room) went on the credit card. Every other meal we had for six days in Las Vegas was paid for separately.

  2. I have to say also my husband and I pay our own way also.it makes for a happier time.also stayed at the mirage in March, glanced in the area that is the still.was not impressed. I miss the seeing the revolution as I walk by…sigh.such is life in Vegas.
