Blonde4Ever: 10 Reasons Why I Love The Plaza

Blonde4ever shares her love for The Plaza in Downtown Las Vegas…

When I started to turn my attention to the downtown area of Las Vegas my first love were the Boyd hotels. Don’t get me wrong, I still love them, but I will explain how The Plaza won me over and why my posterior will be firmly planted at the Plaza next month for most of my Vegas vacation.

1. While I never seem to get mailers from the Plaza, despite having signed up for every list I can think of, the Plaza has some friendly and approachable hosts who will work with you and let you know what kind of comps you are eligible for. I just wish they wouldn’t change staff quite so often. The hosts even go so far as to communicate with future patrons on social media which greatly enhances goodwill towards their hotel.

2. You can tell they are trying. While many hotel-casino chains seem to be on a campaign to wrestle every dime they can from your hand and give little in return, it is apparent that the Plaza is trying to improve itself. They did a complete overhaul of their rooms a few years ago. They improved their video poker offerings when people requested it. Their hotel scent was a little too strong so they dialed it back. They got complaints about their pool area, guess what is undergoing renovations as we speak? They seem to listen and respond, which is a great thing.

3. The WIFI; having easy access to free WIFI in this day and age is such a huge plus, I can’t even adequately explain it. If your room is comped you get free, fast WIFI and if it isn’t you can always go down to the lobby and sit in one of their comfy chairs while you connect with the outside world using their free connection. For me, when I have expended my gambling bankroll for the day, the first thing I want to do is go to my room and get online and share my news. The Plaza lets me do that and I love them for it.

4. The TV channel selection: TV is not something I worry about when I am in Vegas. I have gone entire trips and never turned it on. But again, if your luck goes south early in the day and you want to retire to your room and relax, it is nice to choose from a good selection of channels. I have experienced some other Vegas rooms that had a very limited selection; six of them were in another language and one was the Golf Channel. (I mean does anyone actually watch the Golf channel?) The Plaza seemed to have a huge selection and High Def TVs to boot.

5. I love the large rooms. I somehow feel more pampered in a large room. I know it is not a suite, and you know it is not a suite, but when the room is spacious it can feel like one. I hate rooms where the end of the bed is just inches from the giant armoire. The Plaza gives you room to breathe. The washrooms could be bigger, but I can live with that.

6. The quiet; maybe I have just been lucky, but I have stayed there four times and never had an issue with noise, which frequently happens when you are right on Fremont Street. It seems that being at the very end of the street allows for a little more peace and quiet. It also helps that my room is usually facing the mountains.

7. I like the selection of food offerings. I am a big fan of Hash House a Go Go and their Sage fried chicken and I have it once every trip. Most meals I just want something quick and economical so the food court is where I head. I have had good meals from all the outlets there, Zaba’s Mexican Kitchen, Subway and Mickey D’s. There is also a coffee/gelato place right next to check in. And let’s not forget Pop Up Pizza at the south end of the casino. They are conveniently located right next to the room elevators so you can grab a snack when you are on your way upstairs. I have yet to eat at Oscar’s Steakhouse or the Beer Garden but maybe next trip I will try them out. The Plaza has you covered no matter what kind of food you are craving.

The Plaza

8. Las Vegas Jerky’s; I was wandering around the Plaza last trip and accidentally stumbled across this gem. It sells every kind of jerky, candy or snack you possibly can think of. (Even sugar-free!) You know how sometimes you return to your room and you feel like having something but you don’t need a full meal? Just stop in here and keep a stash of snacks in your room for when the urge hits.

The Plaza

9. Wonderboogie! I know the Plaza has other bands in their lounges and I’m sure they are great but I specifically come for Wonderboogie. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night they turn the Plaza into a 1970’s disco. It may not be everybody’s cup of tea but it is mine. Judging by the way people break out dancing all over the casino when Wonderboogie performs I think there are a lot of people who agree.

10. I enjoy their casino. I have only been visiting for a few years but every time I come there are new slots to try. They seem to try and keep things fresh and interesting. I also love the fact that they have some vintage coin dropper machines. I always run some money through them when I am there.

As you can tell I am a big fan and I am looking forward to my fifth stay at the Plaza this Spring.

  1. Great article! My wife and I go to Vegas every year for our anniversary in September and do two days downtown and two days on the strip. We generally stay at the Plaza and love it! We started staying there before the remodel and actually loved it then so the remodel made us love it even more. Like you stated, they don’t really comp rooms just discounted rates unless you gamble a decent amount like my mother and sister do and they seem to get the free three night stays regularly. The only downside of the property was the pool and I was ecstatic to hear they are remodeling it. We can’t wait to make it back down there again in September and hopefully get to try it out. Keep the great articles coming, Blonde4ever!

  2. they have a a slot tournament for $10 or you can use your points. several sessions on wed/thur/fri I believe. it is worth it. it is a great thing to do when you have spent your gambling budget for the day. the top 5 winners get free play and the next 5 get entered into a drawing to spin the wheel for a prize. and who don’t love a game with a wheel spin!

  3. I am starting to like the Plaza more and more. The atmosphere is fun and the people there are helpful and courteous.

  4. Very nice article, Blonde. My parents had their honeymoon at the Plaza in the 80s so it always has a special place in my heart even if I don’t frequent it as a guest or player.

  5. I’m staying at The Plaza for my 40th birthday next February and I already can’t wait! It will be my first time there, but the nostalgia of The Plaza has always appealed to me. I’ll take Fremont over the Strip any day. And I’ll have to remember to try to sage fried chicken, that sounds delicious!

  6. I have never stayed there but liked my first visit the Plaza as it was the only casino in Vegas that tier matches. I got a King players card right away due to my Diamond status at Caesars. I didn’t get any mailers as well until I changed my address to my PO Box in Michigan. One downtown casino even told me they will not ship mailers to Canada due to the increase in postage!

  7. My husband reads this forum all the time so I thought I would check it out. I’m impressed and enjoyed your article on the Plaza. I have never stayed at the Plaza and haven’t been in there since they’ve remodeled. I will have to check it out when we are in Vegas in July. I too, love disco so will have to have a drink in the lounge and listen to Wonderboogie!

  8. Hi Blonde! Liked your review of Plaza, I have been staying there for over 10 years! The rooms are very quite I love that! I also love the old style Caveman Keno machines the are the best. The sports bar has all the old Caveman’s, & nickel VP, I like u play mostly nickles, Last time I was there in end of March, won $1,950 on incline top Keno ? VP machine on south wall, first time I ever won that much in Vegas! Thanks for all the support of Plaza, I love it & always stay there, also wish Binions still had rooms, that is another great casino!

    1. I liked those old rooms at Binions! Old dark wood! I heard they were gonna fix the rooms up then they found asbestos, & it cost too much to get it removed, so they just closed it! I have stayed in every casino on Fremont, & now the Plaza is the best!!

  9. Hello Blonde, we have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Plaza. We travel from England As you say the hosts are always very accommodating. We also love the rooms, they are large, airy & comfortable. This trip, check in was rapid, efficient & friendly, we asked for & received a fridge & housekeeping were excellent.
We have eaten in every outlet there but not keen on Hash House, simply because we cannot eat one of their meals, even if we share.
All the staff were professional, the slots & VP were loose & we even won a bit. The drinks servers are terrific.
One word of advice & this is no reflection on the Plaza but DON’T rent a car from the Enterprise people near check in.
Firstly the car was way more expensive than the reservation stated & it was faulty, no other car available until the next day, then when I returned the car the young lady agent “Miss Attitude” was the rudest, loudest most unprofessional person I have ever encountered anywhere in the world! She shrieked at me all the way across the entire check in area simply because she didn’t like where I left the car. It was in the Plaza parking.
Apart from that, a fantastic time & hope to return in the fall
