The Riviera: Two Implosions, Months Apart
The Riviera’s two implosions to take place in June and August.
The Riviera will have two separate implosions. One in June and one in August. Specific dates have yet to be announced.
Due to the Riviera’s expansive layout, two towers, and proximity to the strip…
“It’s just too big to do all at once. It wouldn’t be safe to demolish both towers simultaneously” -Terry Jicinsky, LVCVA Senior Vice President of Operations
The “dual but separate” implosion approach was the consensus after the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) met with WA Richardson Builders LLC, who won the bidding process, by bidding lowest, out of four possible demolition candidates. The full board will meet to approve in April.
The two towers: The Monaco Tower and The Monte Carlo Tower, will be imploded in separate months while smaller structures like the Riv’s convention space and parking garages will undergo a teardown process (regular, non-explosive demolition).
After demolition, the footprint of the Riviera will function as ‘open air exhibition space’ and also a parking lot, while the LVCVA raises the money it needs to build on that space as planned.
Let us pour out a beer for the Riv…

Farewell Riv. One of the last ‘Classic Vegas’ resorts. In a way I’m glad it’s being demolished rather than re-skinned to look like an office block! (Sahara/SLS).
Man, I hope they do it when I’m there at the end of June. I’ve always wanted to be there for a Vegas demolition!
I hope the place doesn’t stay empty for too long. I would hate it if another iconic hotel was to be imploded just to have an empty piece of land sitting there for years, like Stardust.
