They're Still Around?

The “They’re Still Around?” Awards

We asked our writers, and contributors to select who or what should get our “They’re Still Around?” Award. No options were given, ensuring that the answers we received were written freely. Here’s how they responded…

 They’re Still Around?

Mermaids/La Bayou. Nobody respects either property, but with cheap hot dogs (Mermaids) and strong drinks (La Bayou) they just don’t go away.
– MICHAEL JAMES

Jeff Civilico……seriously I would have expected him to be performing at Circus Circus or on the sidewalk by now
– GREG BENNETT

Vinnie Favorito. I really enjoy his show and was sad to see him leave the Flamingo. I wish him much success in his new location at the Tommy Wind Theater.
– BLONDE4EVER

N9NE Steakhouse at the Palms still one of the best and it’s packed all the time great food and great eye candy. Great Chef.
– PAPERPOSTER

Criss Angel “Believe.” Not in a good way.
– GREG C

Gordie Brown at Golden Nugget Sadly, Gordie’s voices…and relevance…continue to fade. All of his impersonations are sounding the same. Recent attempts to integrate current hit-makers into his act come off as desperate, and when an impressionist has to identify his characters by name, it’s time to retire.
– SAMMASSEUR

Glitter Gulch. The handful of times I’ve been to downtown Vegas, it always amazes me that this place continues to hold such a prominent spot on Freemont Street.
– GENNADIUS

Criss Angel – Though it shouldn’t surprise me that he’s still around, as his 10-year contract doesn’t expire for another three years. The average 1 and 1/2 to 2 and 1/2 star ratings on various websites should be a sign that that this show is not worth seeing, even for free. This show is a total disappointment on every level.

  1. With it’s quarter coin slots, potato stick french fries and deep fried twinkees….Mermaids is one of the main reasons I go Downtown. I love the old dives.

    1. I walked in there when we did a downtown scavenger hunt with stray boots but didn’t drink or eat.

  2. I saw Gordie Brown 14 months ago… just not good. I had free tickets and figured it would be OK. The audience was mostly older than I was and his references were quite dated. Sure, a George W. Bush impression is timeless at this point, but I had to wonder how many of the outdated impressions were still lost upon the audience. It didn’t strike me as the type of crowd that would appreciate an Allanis Morisette bit, and I was skeptical that a lot of people knew who she was. It seemed more like a crowd that would appreciate a Nipsey Russell or Charo impression, not Axl Rose. I seemed to be the target age of his dated material, and I didn’t enjoy it. It can’t simply be the result of one bad night.

And I was stunned to learn he once worked a showroom on the strip. His material must have been far more polished 10 -15 years ago. The only thing that seems polished now are his teeth.

  3. Sadly Vinnie’s new venue is nothing to write home about and it’s safe to say he misses the production value the Flamingo gave him. I was not impressed with the new venue at all and can’t say I’d go back…..shame bc Vinnie was still as funny as ever but the crowd was non-existent the night I was there and I swear he had his friends as ushers as well as behind the bar pouring drinks out of 2 liter pop bottles. :-(

  4. I played golf with Vinnie a few years ago at Rio Secco. Had a fun round, won bet with him and shared lunch.

Then I read all stories….not so funny any more

  5. Whaaaat?
    1) No mention of Anthony Cools at Paris? Saw him once…that was enough. Tiny room felt like an extra conference room with the left over interlinked fold down chairs. Think fairground hypnotist drunk and having people do stuff that, if they remembered it, he might need security to get him out alive. Ticked my wife off by having young 20’s girl grind on me during the show…definitely not the show to take a significant other to. Maybe a bunch of drunk frat guys but not a married couple (unless in teens still). He had “showgirls” that were assisting him that seemed like they were not from the U.S. and were just kinda off the entire show. Just an odd feeling and a little sketchy in our opinion. Lowered wife’s opinion of how Paris was run. Mind you she did see and enjoy Jubilee before the failed redo. To me it was classy (Jubilee) vs. classless (Anthony Cools).
    2) Harrah’s Improv – saw just after Thanksgiving week and there were just 2 “comedians”. One was a someone that hadn’t been around since Sam Kenison and probably shouldn’t have been. The other was so focused on selling his charity goods after the show it just took away from the show and he was the “main attraction”. Less than an hour for the entire show. Harvey’s in Lake Tahoe’s Improv is at least three comedians and we has a heck of a time up there…last guy up in Tahoe had us in stitches the entire time of his set. Either close the Harrah’s version up or find a better booking agent it needs to be seriously funny from MC to Headliner to work.
