Fontainebleau About to Get Wrapped

The Strip’s eye-sore, Fontainebleau is set to get the St. Regis treatment. Last week, the Clark County Zoning Commission voted unanimously for the long-stalled project to get a cosmetic wrap. Carl Icahn, the owner of Fontainebleau, has 6 months to complete it.  In return, Icahn gets an extension on the external completion timeframe. The wrap wouldn’t cover the whole Fontainebleau building, just from the ground to 100 feet up on the building’s west side.

The 3,889 room blue monster wouldn’t be the first failed project with a cosmetic wrap. The St. Regis was a condo project by Sands Corporation that never completed, so they spent a million on a wrap to cover it up.

As far as when the Fontainebleau will open for business, it’s still up in the air. Speaking of up in the air, the Fontainebleau is Las Vegas’ second tallest building. For those of us who can’t wait to see the view from the top, there’s this youtube video from Urban explorer Steve Duncan. Skip to the 6:23 to see the amazing view. He drops an F-bomb, so if you’re at work…mute your sound.

Better to just knock it down a la Harmon Tower and plant some trees. And perhaps erect a small memorial to failed projects and wasted billions….
