What Keeps Me Coming Back?

When Vegas Bright first opened, Mr. Movestro and I had a discussion about me possibly writing some articles for the site.

I asked myself “What could I contribute to the Vegas blog-reading world? What could I say that hasn’t been said a bazillion times before, and probably in a more eloquent manner?” My conversation with myself continued “Would anyone want to read my opinion on Vegas topics? For that matter, why does this 60-year woman spend her days reading, planning, and dreaming about Vegas?”

What keeps me coming back?
It has been documented by people much smarter than I that the gambling isn’t what it used to be. The compsaretighter; the food and shows are more expensive.

And yet, when I am at home living my –“normal life”– I will say things to myself like, “I would really like to buy that jar of vitamins.” And “I should buy those chia seeds, but no, if I spend that money there will be less money for my next Vegas trip!” And I will pass them by. Things I want or even need. My couch is over twenty years old. Anyone unfortunate enough to sit on it sinks almost to the floor and has a heck of a time getting out of it. Even though I scowl at it every day, I won’t buy a new one.

Because, you don’t spend Vegas money on frivolous things like that. ;-)

Maybe the charm of Vegas is that when I am there, I forget that I am a 60-year-old woman. My aches and pains diminish in the glow of Vegas neon.

In my head, I am young and feisty and ready for a new challenge, even if that “new challenge” is visiting a new-to-me casino.

Part of the allure of Vegas is the endless possibilities that it presents. This next spin could result in a jackpot. Where will you ever see something on the street like THAT again? Do you want to sleep at noon or eat at 3 AM? No problem. Home? What’s that? Vegas is an ever-changing wonderland, filled with happy vacationers looking for a good time. It is a party, all day, every day.

As I approach my umpteenth trip, I am once again filled with that bubbling excitement that accompanies every Vegas adventure.
You would think after so many trips that I would be jaded and disillusioned, but no, not me. That same “Christmas morning” feeling fills my days as I plot and plan the next trip.

See you soon Vegas!

  1. I keep going back (although less frequently now due to the very reasons stated above) because Vegas is the only place I vacation where I don’t feel a need to make an itinerary, or reservations. We land, we get a car, and THEN we choose what to do, based on our mood. I love that. As a traditional planner, I really enjoy the respite from a to-do list, clock watching, and keeping up with a “plan”.

Our Labor Day trip was a perfect example. We had really no plans other than to meet up with some friends once or twice during the weekend, and maybe swim one day at either Green Valley Ranch or Golden Nugget (our two hotels). We ended up staying at the GVR pool for about 15 minutes because, at 6pm in the DESERT, it was too cool in the wind. Who knew?

Vegas holds a sentimental place in my heart due to all the fun we’ve had there over the years. Yes, it has changed. I don’t get the feeling that Vegas “wants me” like it once did. Our once plentiful comps, multiple hotel offers, and generous hosts have vanished like a quarter left in the slot tray. But I still get that excitement as we land and I catch that first whiff of McCarran. I still feel that surge of energy even if we get to our hotel on the first night way past midnight. And my favorite – absolutely favorite – breakfast in the world is not really a food item. It is whatever we order from room service for our first full day in Vegas. Coffee, muffins and the delicious anticipation of a lucky trip at our fingertips.

  2. Enjoy your umpteenth trip! I know you will be plotting the next one on the plane, as you make your way back home. ;-)
