A Great Stay and Lots of News for Plaza Las Vegas

Blonde4ever stayed at the Plaza Las Vegas and got us some scoop….

I recently returned from a five-night stay at the Plaza Las Vegas and loved every minute of it. This is my fifth Plaza stay, and I will explain the reasons that I keep coming back.

I arrived around 1 pm on a Friday and was checked in in a few minutes. I know people have complained about wait times for check in at the Plaza, but you have to take into consideration that the Plaza only has one check in area for 1000 rooms as opposed to somewhere like Main Street Station that has just 500 rooms. They have hired additional front desk personnel, but there are only five stations available at the desk itself. Their reasonable room rates make the Plaza appealing to a wide spectrum of customers, so yes, it will be busy at check in time. In a few months they are installing several self-check-in kiosks which should also help the situation.

I was given a room in the North Tower facing the mountains as is my preference. Those rooms are so quiet you never hear a thing; sometimes you forget that you are even in a hotel. Our room was clean and spacious. The beds were comfortable. The WIFI was free with our comped room (but otherwise covered by the Resort fee), and there are none of those annoying limits on how many appliances you can use in a room. The water pressure was fine. At one point my roommate thought the tub wasn’t draining, but it was because she had the plug in! We did have to wait a bit when we called for an extra luggage rack and some more towels, but it was no problem. I love the way the air conditioning unit stays on constantly. I hate the ones that turn off and on as that always wakes me up. We always enjoy the craziness of downtown, but I will admit that the Plaza is an oasis of peace after the volume of Fremont Street. It is a relief to get back to our quiet room.

One evening I spent around 5 hours in Oscar’s Lounge. No, I am not a lush; I went for their awesome Happy Hour and was having such a good time I just stayed. I have become very enamored of that part of the hotel and plan to hold my next Halloween meet there.

I had some large (to me) wins in the Plaza casino this trip. As we all know that is just the luck of the draw, but I was very happy after getting several premium hands in Video Poker, and even a good slot hit for $500. The Plaza has installed many of the newest games such as the new Wonka, Walking Dead and my personal favorites Dragon Spin and Lightning Links. The scent in the casino has been dialed back to what can only be described as neutral. As always I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the live bands as I played. One night it was Wonder Boogie and the next it was someone different, but they were very entertaining as well.

My roommate and I were excited to try out the new pool area during our stay. Since we were in the North Tower and I thought the only access to the pool was through the South Tower, I made my roommate go parading through the casino in swimming attire, only to realize later that you can get to the pool area from the North Tower by walking through the third floor; so much easier and more comfortable to do when you are all wet! The hot tub was always busy, so we didn’t get to experience that, unfortunately.

We loved our time at the pool and even made sure to schedule another trip the next day. I did take note that many of the chaises were too low to the ground for “people of a certain age” and they are promising to get some higher chairs by next Spring.

The big news is that the Plaza has decided to keep their pool open year round!

Plaza Las Vegas

This is awesome for us Canadians who will swim no matter what time of year it is; the Plaza’s lovely heated pool now makes that possible. The cabanas, bar, and pickle ball courts are open, weather permitting. The food truck and table games are closed for the winter. The hours are currently 9 am to 5 pm.

More exciting news is that there is a new casual restaurant opening soon where the Sushi restaurant used to be. It won’t be 24 hours, but it will stay open until at least 2 am and open early in the morning. This place will feature smaller portions than Hash House a Go Go at lower prices, so I am looking forward to that. In addition, there are new plans in the works for the Beer Garden area.

Some of the renovations on the third floor that have been ongoing for the last year will be wrapping up soon. Another piece of interesting news is that Curt, a former Plaza host has asked to return to the Plaza staff and is coming back soon.

The Plaza has once again demonstrated that it continues to improve and to act on suggestions made by the public. Drop in on your next trip and check it out for yourself.

  1. I have never stayed here but I always go there to play the slots when I am downtown. They DO seem to be pretty lose and I always walk away with more than I came with at the Plaza!

  2. We always enjoy spending time at the Plaza, whether its VP at one of the bars, slots, Wonder Boogie or the Beer Garden! Only stayed there once, but really liked it

  3. I have a room booked there in January. A 1 bedroom suite. Are any better than the others? Without a long walk

    1. Not sure Rick. I have only stayed in normal rooms usually in the North Tower and I ask to be close to the elevator.
The North Tower is the first one you hit off of the lobby so it is less walking in that respect. The South Tower you have to walk through the casino to get to.

  4. Yes, Yes, and YES! (And I told you there was probably another access to the pool from our tower over to the next one on another floor. LOL)

  5. Thanks, Blonde4ever! Nice to see an all-season pool open in Vegas, even with the cold(er) weather months. And have wanted to hang out at Oscars if they have a great happy hour, too!

Did you by chance have any updated Plaza room pictures to post? Realize you had the comped rooms, but are there any Plaza discounts/local incentives offered with a stay (such as a coupon book for the resort fee, discount at Oscars, etc.)?

    Cheers!

    1. I do have current room pictures. If you go sign up at the LasVegas4ever.com forum or our Facebook group I will post them for you there. You do receive a coupon book at check in that has food discounts etc in it. I should have mentioned that! Thanks for reminding me.

      1. Thanks! I’ll check out LV4Ever site. Enjoy all the contributions you and the rest have made to keep this site alive… and me wishing for that next LV trip.

  6. Great news about the new restaurant. When it comes to food offerings, I don’t need a buffet, but Plaza does lack a simple cafe. I don’t care for Hash House, and grab and go foods like Mickey D’s usually don’t appeal to me. A traditional cafe will be greatly appreciated.

  7. Thanks for the great article!

I heard that the South Tower rooms were quieter than the North Tower rooms. I like a silent room, so I’d love your definitive take on which Tower/what side to request when I check-in next month. Thank again!

    1. Well..like I say, I usually stay in the North Tower facing the mountains and it is very quiet. But I did stay in the South Tower once and it was quiet as well. I was facing the pool, but I imagine the opposite side of the South Tower would be even quieter as it is far away from Fremont Street. Thanks for reading!

  8. Thanks for the nice review! I don’t think I’ve ever been in The Plaza and I’ve been to Vegas over 50 times. I will have to check it out.

  9. We(wife & I) have stayed at the Plaza many times(bad & not-so-bad); the last time they were supertight with comps and demonstrated an indifferent customer svc attitude(the knowitall suits, not the regular employees), so we left for D/T Grand. But we love the location.

    1. That is why it is great that there are so many hotels in a concentrated area…something for everyone.
I have never had poor service there personally.

  10. me and my buddy stayed at the Plaza back in May for 2 nites…..I did have a god run on their machines while there and I musta run several thousand dollars thru those machines…..
I always had my players card inserted when I played but the Plasza was one of the few hotels I did not get an email from after we got home even tho they were right in the middle of remodeling the casino….
just about every other hotel offered me comp rooms or discounted rooms but nothing from Plaza….so when I was booking for our Dec trip I contacted a host at the Plaza to see about a discounted or comped room….
HA…….I could have reseved a room thru hotels.com cheaper than the offer they made me so it looks like I wont be staying at the Plaza again any time soon….
PS….I walked into the D to get a players card and walked out and didnt spend a dime in the casino and I got an offer from them for 3 free nites on my next visit……go figure….

  11. Het Blonde I have been staying there for 10 years at least twice a year, their rooms are quiet I like that, the bar tenders are very friendly & I like the large selection of VP & keno machines! My only complaint is the resort fee it has been going up & up, I don’t use wifi the pool or the gym. I ‘m trying thee Queen next week & see how that goes! No resort fee for sure!

  12. Great review! I have a problem with their comp system. It seems they are changing it too often. Last time I stayed and played they told me they were comping based on losses and the points were not used?
