“Barry Z” Longs For Cheap Steak and Whiskey in “Vegas Musts”

Vegas Bright Reader Barry Z shares his Vegas Musts…

Upon review, it seems like my list of “Vegas Musts” revolve around the early morning hours. And why not? Las Vegas is the quintessential 24-hour city where whatever was going on when you went to bed is still going on when you wake up. So get up or stay up and let’s get going! We’ll sleep on the plane.

Cheap Steak and Eggs

Although not as plentiful as they once were, cheap steak & eggs specials can still be found between midnight and dawn at various places. This is a meal that I would never order anywhere else due to its high price. But at $4.00 – $6.00, it’s a “must” if ever there was one. Somehow, you know it’s going to be a special day when you begin it heavier by a steak and lighter by less than a fin. A perfect day will include what I call a “quinella” – TWO $3.95 steak & egg breakfasts in a single 24-hour period. Shoot me while I’m happy!

Musts

Drive the entire length of the Las Vegas Strip. With full “neon.”

Is there anything quite like driving the entire length of the Strip and enjoying the sight of all the lights blazing? Well, not for me! (With traffic in Vegas being the way it is these days, this is a feat best accomplished during early morning hours.) Check it out! This is the opening sequence of your own, private Vegas movie.

The brilliance of the neon (although they told me at the Neon Museum that they’re all LEDs now) is Las Vegas’ unique contribution to world culture and modern aesthetics. Whether or not you consider Vegas neon to be a beautiful thing or a tacky blight, there’s nothing on earth that can compare to the sight. Let the games begin!

Musts

Whisky and craps before breakfast.

There’s nothing that says, “I’m on vacation,” quite like ordering a shot of whisky while shooting craps . . . and before breakfast, no less! Just in case you needed a reminder, it just lets you know that you’re not in your home town.

You’re not at work. There’s nothing planned for the day but to go where you want and do what you please. And nothing before you but possibilities. For me, nothing quite signifies a day full of promise like whisky and craps before breakfast.

Musts

Luxuriate in the Pacific Time Zone.

For an “East-coaster,” it’s simply a pleasure to be in “that magical place just three hours from now”. Let me count the ways:

1. 60 Minutes is always on at its regular time.

2. Monday Night Football is on during dinner!

3. And you can get to bed by 10:00 PM.

4. Ditto for any playoff game in any sport.

5. The early Sunday NFL game is on before lunch (or during a leisurely brunch/late breakfast).

6. The late game is on around lunch time – and ends in time to get a nap.

7. Sunday Night Football? See #2 & 3.

8. Thursday Night Football? See #2 & 3.

9. College Football? SEC and east coast night games start around suppertime and end just before midnight! (Sorry about that, but there are some things that PST just can’t cure.)

  1. I’m with you on the steak n eggs. at home I rarely get to have steak unless someone else cooks it or pays for it! in vegas, I usually have it at least 4 times on a 6 night stay. when it is too early for late night specials, I think I usually get it at the Fremont, or the Cal, or the Orleans, all are well under $10.
