Plaza Hotel Casino Travels “Back To The Future” This Wednesday

You’d need a time machine to experience the last moment when Downtown’s Plaza Hotel Casino did anything worth cheering for. And that’s exactly what we’re doing after opening an email from Plaza’s marketing department this past weekend.

On Wednesday, October 21st, 2015, Plaza Hotel is inviting movie fans to hop into their flying Delorean and head back to the future for a very clever “Back To Biff’s” celebration.

The media outlets have been having a jolly good time comparing aspects of life in 2015 that the movie got right (endless movie sequels in 3D) and wrong (powered self-lacing shoes and flying cars, anyone?).

If you’ve missed the mania, read on. Toyota recently sponsored a television commercial with Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Doc Emmett Brown) discussing the film’s predictions. This week, talk arose of the cast reuniting for a fourth film (nice gesture…but…please don’t).  And Universal Studios just released a faux trailer for Jaws 19 3-D, as seen in the film.

Mondotees.com is releasing a six-album set of soundtracks on vinyl (how very 80’s-retro) in a spectacular boxed set with colored LP discs.  They’ll be available for pre-order on Wednesday. Then entire trilogy will be back in theaters for one day this week…on October 21st, naturally (a blu-ray release will hit stores simultaneously).

Where does Plaza Hotel fit into all this hoopla? Well, the eye-catching structure had a major role in Part II, standing in as “Biff’s Pleasure Paradise”. The series’ villain, Biff Tannen, had become a rich and powerful tyrant in an altered timeline, ruling the city from his hotel penthouse. It was such a significant and memorable image throughout the film that on my first trip to Fremont Street, I remember looking up at the Plaza and shouting “Look, it’s Biff’s Casino!”.

back-future

A replica of Doc Brown’s time-traveling Delorean car has made many appearances on Fremont Street throughout the years, and it’ll be back at the Plaza this week. “Back To Biff’s” will also feature character look-alikes, an 80’s inspired DJ set, photo booth, costume contest and food/drink specials… under the dome at Oscar’s Beef, Booze and Broads and the first-floor Beer Garden.

The fun begins at 6 pm and continues until 11. Then you can hop in your Delorean, hit 88 mph (the speed needed to break the time barrier) and do it all over again.

If you attend, be sure to share your photos with us on our Facebook page.
